The Daily Ride

17 September 2016

We've been buying stock over the past couple of weeks for the spring. Its a tight market, the collectibles are in hot demand. Got some nice small Ducatis from the 70s on their way to NZ, the Vento 350 and the 500 Sport. Next wekk we have our first annual 2 stroke ramble which should be fun.

07 September 2016

Its been way too long since I sat down and wrote a blog. Im not sure that anyone actually reads this but here goes. Its been a wild year in the classic motorcycle world, pries are continuing to astound us, particularly Honda RC30/RC45 and BMW R80GS reaching some heady levels. We are in the market buying every day and its tough out there, competition at auction is stronger than ever and everybody is after the rare stuff.

Our new Hamilton shop is up and running after a long setup period. We are fully equipped with a machine shop including a lathe, mill. and most importantly a Vapormate Blasting Cabinet, for those special alloy finishes. I searching for a couple of extra mechanics at present - guys who have an eye for detail and know what a carb is! Looking forward to attending the Barber Vintage Festival in Alabama in a few weeks.

On August 5, 2015 Carbon Garage’s association with Joe Whelan ended. We wish Joe well in his future endeavors.

Carbon Garage remains fully committed to Texas and the wider North American market, and to this end we are pleased to announce the appointment of Krisztian Lantos as Sales Manager (replacing Joe Whelan). Krisztian comes to us from RPM Cycles, a leading multi-franchise dealer in Dallas-Fort Worth, where he was Honda Sales ...Manager and Salesman of the Year in 2013. Let me take this opportunity to warmly welcome Krisztian to the Carbon Garage team.

We are continuing our search for experienced Motorcycle Technicians in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, however in the interim, Neil Mackley, our Group Service Manager, who has more than 30 years-service experience, will take care of customer service needs until such time as we find the right people. Neil loves #Ducati’s (actually he is one eyed about anything old and Italian including #Lambretta and #Vespa scoots) and is excited about spending some time in sunny Texas.

Our plan all along has been to deliver our clients in Dallas an experience similar to that from our award winning Newmarket store in New Zealand. The premises in Lewisville never fulfilled that promise, and it’s time for us to confidently move forward. Accordingly we have relocated to temporary premises on the Belt Line Road, off I-35 until such time as our new café, showroom & workshop is completed in the Design District. We look forward to keeping you all posted on updates as the opening date draws nearer ‪#‎carbongarage‬

26 May 2015

New Zealand Subsctiption TV channel SKYSports came to our Carbon Garage Newmarket NZ showroom/workshop/cafe to film one of their segments for a show called #SKYSPEED. Presenters Steve McIvor and Racing legend Greg Murphy were here checking out our superbikes! A couple of the clips can be viewed here: (Clip 1) Steve McIvor talking to Rob 'Mr Carbon Garage' about what we do and the concept behind our business plus having a close look at a Ducati Prototype 1098AC built by MOTO CORSE Japan; (Clip 2) Come and talk about bikes all day... Plus to look at some of our motorcycles in store, great food and great coffee.

MARKET UPDATE

Well folks, I have just come back from a week long buying trip to China and Japan. Attended auctions in Japan on Wednesday have to say it was tough. Prices are on the rise, particularly for good clean classics. Stand outs at the moment seem to be our old favorites, the homologated sportbikes from the 80s and 90s, but we are also seeing a noticeable rise in the prices for the smokers like RG500, NS400R,NSR250, RGV250 and RZV500. These were once in abundance, but have slowly disappeared. I saw a new Yamaha RZV500 sell for north of $23,000 last week! Unheard of in Japan. Anyway, we are always on the lookout for good clean classics - ride safe.

It's always nice to meet new people coming to our Carbon Garage asking questions like... is this a museum? what is this? A bar, a restaurant, themed cafe or a garage? An article written by a fellow visitor explains it very well..

Now I am not big on motorcycle customisation, but who knows, maybe I can be converted. We acquired an old 1980 Honda CB750F the other day, a pretty ratty example, and thats being kind. Too gar gone to be worth any kind of restoration, so it sat in the shop for a couple of days while we decided what to do with it. Anyway, a bottle of Single Malt Whiskey came out, with a grinder, the Dremel tool and lots of inspiration. The project has taken on a life now and its starting to look pretty interesting - watch this space.....

19 August 2014

Had a lovely young chap in here over the weekend who is fighting a brain tumor. Despite all the treatments and difficulties he is facing, I cannot remember meeting such a positive and inspirational person. Rather than lying down and worrying about life, he wants to get his teeth into an old bike restoration. Great stuff Andrew!

We are on the lookout for more old bikes to restore, and in particular interesting Honda's from the 70's. We have a Honda CB350 Four here waiting a start, along with a VFR750R. On the bench is a CX650 Turbo with the motor out of the frame for cam chain and water pump replacement - fabulous projects.....

Opening Sunday!?!?! What do you think? A lot of our customers have been asking us when we will be opening Sundays so you keen bikers can ride in to see us and those who don't ride can pop in for great food and coffee as well as to enjoy seeing our motorcycles. So we decided to give it a go and let's do it from this Sunday (17th August 2014)!

12 August 2014
Occassionally I am at Carbon Garage on the odd Sunday, usually for just a few minutes, and the phone seems to always ring with folks calling asking whether we are open. Well from this weekend onward - the cafe and workshop are open on Sundays! In fact, I reckon we might just be the ONLY motorcycle workshop in Auckland open on a Sunday, so roll on in....

I've been daydreaming today about single-sided swing arms and their origins, sad on a Sunday but unfortunately true. These thoughts stem from a very interesting article I read a few days ago by acclaimed author Jason Cormier on the radical Yamaha GTS1000. The interesting thing was the involvement of French oil company ELF in the research and development of alternative suspension and steering systems for motorcycles. In fact, a little bit of trivia - the Honda RVF750R RC45 proudly acknowledges the patents held by ELF on a sticker on its Pro-Arm. Nice.

05 August 2014
Following on from my post on 29 July 2014, I am discovering there really is something wrong with some people in the motorcycle industry. Over the past few days I have been engaged in correspondence with a buyer purporting to be interested in a late model Ducati Hypermotard we have for sale. Most of the correspondence has centred around service history, and him wanting "receipts" for work done - on a bike which has done just 3,700km, then it turned to him accusing us of being "dodgy". After some sleuth work - turns out he is the Sales Manager for a regional Ducati, Triumph, Yamaha dealer! Yes we compete with them, and seemingly are pricing our stock more attractively. A couple of telephone calls turned ugly very quickly as clearly this guy has some kind of personality disorder and I for sure wouldn't want to be buying a bike from them. In their defence however the owner of the business did'nt seem to know about it - and was sympathetic.

Shame on them....there is seemingly very little honour left in business these days. We will continue to offer the very best prices and service in the industry and operate with integrity.

BEWARE Shoplifters in Newmarket. A Maori couple with 3 children (Photos) came in on Saturday 2 August 2014 #carbongarage when we were full between 2.37pm and 3pm, they pretended to look around, brought in a paper carton of Fresh Up juice with them to drink at our cafe, then proceeded to steal our merchandise, magazines & drinks. Before leaving, the overweight Maori woman pictured, approx 5' 7" was abusive, racist and aggressive towards our staff claiming 'she is Maori, this is her land' that 'we are not from here'. This shoplifting and abusive incident has been reported to the Police (reference # 140804-7971). If you know or have seen them, please contact your local police to report them asap. #newmarket #police

Something has really pulled my chain today...and I'm sure we have all come across this before. We advertise our bikes in a variety of places, including TradeMe, eBay and on our own website. As a licensed motor vehicle dealer, we only advertise bikes we own, or are selling on behalf of an owner who is known to us. Well today our lovely Honda RVF750R RC45, which is advertised on eBay, was featured on www.raresportbikesforsale.com - a discussion started, the bike had a gazillion likes, and some knucklehead from what I assume to be somewhere in back country USA starts burbling on about how the bike is not owned by us; we are scammers; the bike is not in our workshop; all this kind of bullshit. Now I hate 'web trolls' and this kind of attack really gets me annoyed. Some people must be just born like that - beats me why they bother....anyway, fortunately we deal with enough great people in this business to make up for the one in one thousand.

27 July 2014
Had a rare opportunity today to get out for a while and put some miles under a bike. Agreed to meet a couple of customers at Carbon Garage and take a ride from there. When a BMW R1200S and BMW HP2 turned up, the Bimota I had selected got put away and out came the HP4. Every time I ride the HP4 I am amazed by two things - firstly, the way it delivers it's horsepower, so linear from 2000rpm to what seems like infinity, and secondly, just how easy it is to ride! After a very nice breakfast out at Coatesville, we swapped around and I got to ride the HP2. I must say the best boxer engined BMW I have ever ridden, nice  and light and totally chuck able. I love the wide bars, Ohlins suspension and Akrapovic pipe. The HP2 is definitely on my shopping list for the future, a quality piece of kit.

23 July 2014
Been out at Hampton Downs today driving the new BMW M3, M4 and M235i - have to say, the stand out car of he day was the M235i. Held its own all moring in the company of the M cars in terms of performance. Great fun on the skid pan trying to get the M4 to do drifts in a straight line for 80 metres or so - car just does'nt like this treatment. The M cars though surely make good use of their turbo power and really hammer on the circuit when you push them. A big thanks to Jerry Clayton BMW and BMW Experience for their kind hospitality.

22 July 2014
Had our first Harley Davidson in today for a steering head bearing job. While helping Spannerman out for a few minutes, I became amused with the decals fitted to the mirrors. They proclaimed "Items in the rear view mirror may be closer than they seem". Don't see these stickers fitted to a Honda or Ducati do you - we know why...

21 July 2014
Been out today investigating a call from a lovely old gent who had an old Honda under his house. Me and Spannerman rode a couple of rockets up to him and found a lovely little Honda 350 Four which had risen from its resting place. It had been put under the house 26 years ago after it 'played up in the rain' one day. Overall the bike was a little worse for wear, with light corrosion on the engine casings etc but everything present and correct. These bikes are a sweet little thing and the smallest in a series originally based on the CB750. Looking forward to the restoration.

15 July 2014
The sun has come out in Auckland and the birds are singing. Our showroom is filling up fast with some really nice machines. Me and Spannerman are having a hard time deciding what to ride each day....terrible. Last week was Suzuki week, with us purchasing two real nice vintage GSXR1100s in Japan. These are becoming a little collectable and drawing plenty of enquiry.

10 June 2014
It's raining cats and dogs out there so while our workshop and cafe is open and busy serving you with a smile, a few of us decided to spend some time with our coffee guys in Hamilton at Weka Coffee...artisans, watching how they do what they love and what they do best.....constantly checking the flavors and quality from their custom air roaster - wow. The coffee aroma there was divine!
